Sci-Fi Night, Leia progress, etc

It’s the usual post-weekend Monday update.

First up! Saturday night we went to Sci-Fi night with the Riverkings.

When they say “take a silly picture” I never know what to do LOL

It was fun, Chase wants to go to another game just to sit and watch.

Which brings me to Leia updates….
This was probably the second-to-last troop for my Leia costume. I figure The Last Jedi opening night will be the last. I could have finished the new dress for Saturday night, but I decided to wait til I have my new belt done and debut them together.

Friday night I decided to switch collar shapes – to a curved collar.

I got that sewn onto the outside layer, and then slip-stitched the inside of the neck closed.

(pinned closed from the outside)

Closed up from the inside.

So all I have left is sewing the hook and eyes on.

Saturday night I took a quick comparison shot when I got home.

Here’s the old one. Things I wanted to change:
1. keyhole was too small in the back.
2. collar overlapped by several inches in the back.
3. hood was 2 layers instead of 1
4. Sleeve openings too large
5. Sleeve and dress hems were just folded over and top-stitched down.
5. Side slits weren’t tall enough (I did them based on my too-short boots).

New dress improvements:
1. keyhole is closer to right length
2. collar isn’t finished yet — but meets center back and closes with the right kind of hook and eyes
3. hood is one layer (it was flipped up on one side and looks a little weird here)
4. Sleeve openings shortened
5. Lining is properly attached, no top-stitching
6. Side slits hit just above the knee

The thinner fabric on the new dress makes the blousing a little trickier to do and get even. I may add the little gathers along the front like the actual dress had (hidden by the belt) — but that’s something I’ll wait on having my new belt finished to do. I want to make sure they’re placed right.

Sunday we were going to run to Lowe’s to get some stuff Chase needed for the backyard. I threw a tshirt in the dryer on wrinkle release for like 2-3 minutes, came back to get it and the dryer smelled like burning. I’d just used it the day before with no problems. So we disassembled it, cleaned it out (thought we found the problem with some blackened lint under the heating element), put it back together and tried it again… still smelled like burning. Ugh.
So we’re disassembling it again tonight — a little further this time. Hopefully we can find the problem and fix it without having to pay to have a repairman come out. Had enough house problems to deal with this year without the dryer going out.

While I was standing there holding parts for Chase, I was looking at the old bulletin board I have hanging in the laundry room and spotted these two old polaroids.

This was from the Big Scoop event in 2006… we did this for several years, 2004-2007 I think? This year I did Leia, Chase did Vader, and Ash came in Stitch. And Nana brought Kevin up and he got pics with us. I don’t think I’ve ever scanned them in so here they are. That was a fun event.

I also had to scan a bunch of old stuff for a Christmas project I’m working on.

Me and Kevin:

Me and my mom:

Chase complains that I always ask to take twirling pics in my costumes, but it’s nothing new.

Whining at Kevin, nothing new here either.

Some more random stuff from the weekend….
